What individual therapy is
A private space to work on what's actually yours
Group work teaches you that you're not alone. Individual therapy is where you stop performing and start doing the personal work. It's the room where the story you haven't told anyone, the guilt, the shame, the real reason you picked up, finally has a safe place to land.
Your clinician helps you untangle how substance use and your mental health feed each other. Depression, anxiety, past trauma, grief, and co-occurring disorders are common threads. In one-on-one sessions you build the coping tools that fit your exact life, not a generic script.
There's no right or wrong way to show up. Come as you are. The work moves at your pace, and every session is confidential.
What we work on together
Your sessions, your focus
Addiction & relapse prevention
Untangle the behaviors and situations that lead to use, and build a plan you can actually follow in Biddeford, Portland, and across the coast.
Co-occurring mental health
Address the depression, anxiety, and trauma that often sit underneath substance use, treated together, never separately.
Trauma & grief
Process painful experiences in a safe, paced way with clinicians trained in trauma-informed care.
Relationship & family stress
Repair the trust that addiction strains, and prepare for the conversations that happen at home and at work.
Life skills & coping
Learn practical tools for cravings, stress, sleep, and the hard moments that used to end in relapse.
Motivation & confidence
Strengthen the reasons that brought you here, and keep them front and center when doubt creeps in.
What to expect
How an individual session works
01
Your story
We start by listening. What brought you here, what's been hard, and what you want out of this.
02
A real plan
You and your clinician set clear, measurable goals, the kind you can look back on and see progress.
03
Skills you keep
Between sessions you practice concrete tools: recognizing triggers, reframing thoughts, and handling cravings.
04
Steady follow-through
Sessions stay connected to your overall care plan, so what you learn in private carries into group and day-to-day life.
How it fits
Individual therapy at every level of care
Whatever step of recovery you're on, one-on-one counseling is part of the picture, not an add-on.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
The most structured option we offer, daily programming with individual therapy built in, for clients who need intensive, inpatient-level structure while living at home.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Multiple sessions a week that keep you anchored while you manage work and family. Individual counseling is a core part of the schedule.
Outpatient (OP)
Lighter-touch care for the next step down, with ongoing one-on-one therapy to protect your progress long after structured programming ends.
Insurance
In-network with almost every plan.
Portland Treatment is in-network with Anthem, UMR/UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Harvard Pilgrim, Martin's Point, TRICARE and MaineCare, Cigna is our only out-of-network plan. In-network means contracted rates, lower coinsurance and no balance bill. We verify your benefits free, in minutes, with no obligation.
