What outpatient is
The level of care that holds the gains you already made
Outpatient treatment is the least intensive clinical level of care we offer, typically one or two appointments a week, scheduled around a full work and family life. It is where most people spend the longest stretch of their recovery, because it is built to be sustainable for months, not weeks.
Most OP clients step down from our PHP or IOP and keep the same therapist and the same treatment plan. Others come in at this level from the start, when an assessment shows their use is caught early, their home life is stable, and weekly clinical support is what they actually need.
Relapse risk does not end when structure does, it usually rises. Outpatient care is how we keep contact, catch warning signs early, and put more support back in place before a hard week turns into a return to use.

What outpatient looks like
A lighter schedule, the same clinical team
One or two touchpoints a week, built around your job and your family, enough contact to keep recovery visible and supported.
Individual therapy
Weekly or biweekly sessions with your primary therapist, CBT, DBT skills, trauma-informed work, and relapse prevention tailored to where you are now.
Group support
Ongoing recovery groups with peers further along the same road, so accountability and community don't disappear when the intensive phase ends.
Medication management
Continued MAT with buprenorphine or naltrexone and psychiatric medication follow-up, managed by our medical team on your schedule.
Family and alumni
Family sessions when the household needs them and alumni connection so you stay tied to people who understand the work.
Good to know: if life gets harder, we can step you back up to IOP or PHP quickly, no new intake, no waiting list, same team.
What's included in our outpatient program
Fewer hours, same clinical standard, the support that carries recovery through the ordinary weeks.
Evidence-based therapy
CBT, DBT skills, and motivational interviewing carried forward from the intensive phase, tuned to long-term maintenance.
Co-occurring care
Depression, anxiety, and trauma treated alongside substance use, with psychiatric follow-up when it's part of your plan.
Medication-assisted treatment
Long-term buprenorphine or naltrexone management with medical oversight, refills, and check-ins that fit a working schedule.
Relapse-prevention planning
A written plan you actually use, triggers, warning signs, and the specific people to call when a week goes sideways.
Case management
Continued help with employment, court or probation requirements, housing, and community resources across York and Cumberland County.
Alumni community
Connection to people who came through the same programs, so recovery keeps a community around it long after discharge.

Is outpatient right for you?
Signs OP is the right level of care
- You've completed PHP or IOP and want to keep clinical support without full-week programming.
- Your use was caught early and hasn't required detox or a higher level of care.
- You're stable at home, working or in school, and have support around you.
- You need ongoing MAT and medication management with a team that knows your history.
- You want a place to bring the hard weeks before they turn into a relapse.
If a short phone assessment shows you need more structure than outpatient, we'll say so, and get you into IOP, PHP, or a trusted detox or residential partner first.

Outpatient questions
- What is an outpatient program (OP) for addiction?
- Outpatient treatment is structured addiction care delivered in one or two appointments a week while you live at home and keep working. It usually includes individual therapy, a recovery group, and ongoing medication management, and it is the level of care most people stay in the longest.
- How is outpatient different from IOP?
- IOP is three-hour clinical sessions three to five days a week. Outpatient is the step down from that, typically one or two sessions a week, designed for people who are stable and need continued clinical support rather than intensive structure.
- Do I have to complete IOP before starting outpatient?
- No. Many clients step down from PHP or IOP, but others start directly in outpatient when a clinical assessment shows that is the right level of care from the beginning.
- How long does outpatient treatment last?
- There is no fixed end date. Some clients stay a few months, others stay a year or more, especially when they are on medication-assisted treatment. Your plan is reviewed with your therapist as your recovery changes.
- Can I continue Suboxone or Vivitrol in outpatient?
- Yes. We work hand in hand with local MAT providers who prescribe and manage buprenorphine (Suboxone) and naltrexone (Vivitrol), and we coordinate with them for as long as medication is clinically appropriate while you do your therapy with us.
- Does MaineCare or insurance cover outpatient rehab in Maine?
- In most cases, yes. Outpatient treatment is covered by MaineCare and nearly all commercial plans. We verify your benefits for free, in minutes, with no obligation and nothing on your record.
- What if I start struggling again while in outpatient?
- Tell us early. We can step you back up to IOP or PHP quickly, adjust medication, or add sessions, without a new intake and without a waitlist.
