What PHP is
The step between residential care and everyday life
A partial hospitalization program, sometimes called day treatment, is the highest level of outpatient care. You spend most of the day at our Biddeford center in structured therapy and medical check-ins, then go home to family, your own kitchen, and your own routine each evening.
PHP fits two situations. If you have just finished detox or residential treatment, it keeps the structure high while you practice recovery in the real world. If you have not been inpatient but weekly counseling is not holding, PHP gives you serious clinical intensity without leaving Maine or pausing your life entirely.
Every plan is individualized. Intake includes a full clinical assessment, substance use history, physical and mental health, housing, work, family, and any co-occurring conditions, and the plan is revised as you progress toward IOP and outpatient.

A day in PHP
What a PHP day actually looks like
Morning
Arrival and intentions
Coffee, a check-in with your care team, and a short group to set goals for the day. If you're on medication or need a medical check-in, that happens here too, quietly, without taking over the morning.
Midday
Clinical group work
CBT and DBT skills groups, relapse prevention, and process groups with peers who are in the same phase of recovery.
Afternoon
Individual and family therapy
One-on-one sessions with your primary therapist, plus scheduled family therapy so the people around you understand the plan.
Evening
Home
You go home. Sleep in your own bed, keep family routines intact, and bring back what worked and what didn't the next morning.
Note: optional sober living is available. If home isn't a stable place to start, we can help coordinate a bed with our network of trusted local partners while you're in PHP.
What's included in our PHP
One program, one team, one treatment plan, built around the root causes, not just the symptoms.
Individual therapy
A primary therapist who knows your history and adjusts the plan as things change, not a rotating cast.
Group counseling
Daily clinical groups built on CBT, DBT, and relapse prevention, with peers from the same Southern Maine communities.
Family therapy
Structured sessions that repair communication and teach families what support actually looks like day to day.
Medication management
Psychiatric and medical oversight for cravings and co-occurring conditions, coordinated with trusted local prescribers when clinically indicated.
Co-occurring care
Depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, and seasonal affective disorder treated alongside substance use, not after it.
Case management
A dedicated case manager helps with the practical side of recovery, FMLA and work paperwork, court or probation requirements, housing, transportation, and referrals to community resources across York and Cumberland County.
Holistic care
Yoga, meditation, breathwork and stillness work, sound baths, visualization exercises, art therapy, and nature and grounding practices woven into the weekly schedule, because recovery is easier to hold when your body and nervous system get care too, not just your thoughts.
Step-down planning
A clear path from PHP into IOP, outpatient, and alumni support, with the same clinical team the whole way.

Is PHP right for you?
Signs PHP is the right level of care
- You've completed detox or residential treatment and need structure before stepping down.
- Weekly therapy or IOP hasn't been enough to keep you stable.
- You have a co-occurring mental health condition that needs daily clinical attention.
- You're medically stable but still managing cravings, sleep, or medication changes.
- You have housing and support at home, and leaving Maine for inpatient care isn't realistic.
Not sure? A short phone assessment answers it. If a higher level of care is safer, we'll say so and help you get there through our network of trusted Maine providers.

PHP questions
- What is a partial hospitalization program (PHP)?
- PHP is the most intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment. You attend structured clinical programming most of the day, typically five days a week, and return home each evening. It includes individual therapy, group counseling, family therapy, medical and medication oversight, case management, and holistic care like yoga, meditation, breathwork, sound baths, visualization exercises, art therapy, and nature and grounding practices.
- How is PHP different from IOP?
- PHP runs roughly five to six clinical hours a day, five days a week, with medical oversight built in. IOP is a step down, usually three hours a day, three to five days a week, designed to fit around work and school. Most clients move from PHP into IOP as they stabilize.
- How long does PHP last?
- Most people spend two to four weeks in PHP, though length of stay is clinical, not fixed. Your treatment plan is reviewed continuously, and you step down to IOP when you and your team agree you're ready.
- Do I sleep at the facility during PHP?
- No. PHP is a day program, you go home every night. That's the main difference between PHP and residential or inpatient treatment.
- Does insurance or MaineCare cover PHP in Maine?
- In most cases, yes. Partial hospitalization is a recognized level of care under nearly all commercial plans and MaineCare. We verify your benefits for free, in minutes, with no obligation and nothing on your record.
- Where is your PHP located?
- Our outpatient center is in Biddeford, Maine, about twenty minutes from downtown Portland and easily reached from Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, South Portland, Kennebunk, and Sanford.
- Can I keep working while in PHP?
- PHP takes up most of the day, so full-time work usually isn't possible during that phase. Many clients use FMLA or short-term leave for PHP and return to work when they step down to IOP or outpatient care.
